Some time after life began to get going here on earth the change in the atmospheric chemistry caused a massive global ice age, this passed, and what little life had managed to survive, mainly bacteria and a few algae, thrived and proliforated exponentially in the new mild conditions. We may have started as soup, but it was as a melting dessert that we got the hang of evolving.
