Alchemy wasn't really about lead into gold, it was usually death into life, the immutable metals, quicksilvers, were thought to hold the key, being matter transformed into different matter, dull into irridescent, solid into gaseous, why not? Is life not just the addition of, well, life, to a dead thing?
Find the 'life' element and you're there, the 'life' thing was referred to as Quicksilver.
